This monograph offers an overview of general deep learning methodology together with its applications to a variety of signal and information processing tasks. The authors select application areas using three criteria: their own expertise and knowledge, areas already transformed by successful use of deep learning technology, and areas with the potential to be significantly impacted by deep learning that are experiencing research growth. It thus serves as a broad survey rather than a single new method.

Among the domains covered are speech recognition and computer vision as examples already transformed by deep learning, alongside emerging areas such as natural language and text processing, information retrieval, and multimodal information processing empowered by multi-task deep learning. This work mattered as a consolidated reference documenting both the established successes and the promising directions of deep learning across signal and information processing.

Abstract

This monograph provides an overview of general deep learning methodology and its applications to a variety of signal and information processing tasks. Application areas are chosen based on the authors' expertise, areas already transformed by deep learning such as speech recognition and computer vision, and areas with strong potential and research growth. The latter include natural language and text processing, information retrieval, and multimodal information processing empowered by multi-task deep learning.
